Stage 5: Egg Retrieval and Semen Collection

Your partner or pre-arranged donor will also provide sperm. This sperm will fertilize your fresh eggs in the embryology laboratory. You will also be given progesterone, which can help prepare your body and uterus for pregnancy.

Stage 6: Implantation

Within a week after your eggs are harvested, your team will place the embryo in your uterus. This is known as ‘implantation day’. You may experience slight cramping during and after the non-invasive procedure. Most people don’t feel any discomfort. If you feel any discomfort, contact your fertility nurse.

Stage 7: Pregnancy Test

You will be seen by your doctor or fertility team approximately 9-12 days after your embryo transfer. To determine if you are pregnant, they will perform a scan and run blood tests. A full IVF cycle typically takes around three weeks.


The Ideal IVF Diet

Experts recommend that you do not make any major changes to your diet during IVF cycles. You should ensure that you are eating a healthy, balanced diet before you start IVF. This will allow you to obtain a wide range of nutrients, vitamins, and minerals. This is called the preconception period.

Experts have found that the Mediterranean Diet, which is recommended for six months before IVF, may improve clinical outcomes. The Mediterranean Diet includes a wide variety of fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains, fish, and a small amount of red meat. Research has shown that women who follow this diet for at most six months before IVF have a 65-68% higher chance of having a successful pregnancy.
